Columbus Wireless was formed to invest in the fixed
wireless segment of the local telecommunications services
marketplace. This includes a range of wireless services,
including wireless broadband services, to and from fixed
customer locations such as businesses, residences and
schools. Columbus Wireless acquired wireless spectrum
rights to twenty-one (21) major markets to construct and
operate Point-Point Microwave Radio Service systems that
utilize discreet channel capacity in the 38.6-40.0 gigahertz
frequency band. These wireless systems are capable of
delivering a range of fixed wireless broadband services
in the local telecommunications services marketplace including:
(i) local exchange services, (ii) local long distance
access, (iii) data transmission, (iv) point-to-point local
connectivity, (v) PCS backhaul, (vi) digital video, and
(vii) connectivity of fixed local area and wide area networks.
Nineteen
(19) of these systems were sold to a publicly-traded
telecommunications company yielding a return of 47 times
original cost. Columbus Wireless remains actively engaged
in the 38.6-40.0 gigahertz frequency band through additional
license ownership and participation in FCC auctions.
In addition, Columbus Wireless has made three (3) other
portfolio investments: (i) Satcom International Group
(two-way satellite messaging), (ii) Lin Television (12
network affiliated stations), and (iii) Lone Star Holdings
Partnership, LP (private equity, venture capital fund).
